There is no need to use any custom field, things are automated. Additionally you don’t actually have to use front page thumbnail inside the post

The method we have in Advanced Newspaper is that so, you can write url of the image to upload on your servers on upload window, and image will be resized in thumbnail size when it is crunched with built in functions of WordPress, so then you can use Set Thumbnail option to display it on front page.
